Essential art with Yuli Carvajal
Yuli Carvajal is a Colombia-born, Calgary/Mohkinstis-based self-taught artist. He is known for whimsical and modern paintings that capture the world with a cheerful poise. We caught up with Yuli to discuss the impact of art and how his background influences his work.
Pride In Business: What inspired you to pursue a career as an artist?
Yuli Carvajal: I used to try to hide my artistic side, but every time I did, I felt like I wasn't being true to myself. Art has been a healing and calming force for me, especially during times of anxiety or vulnerability. Even in my darkest moments, when I felt lost and alone, art was always there for me. With every stroke of the brush, I feel connected to my land and my family, even when I'm far away from them.
Luckily, I've found that Calgary is a great place for artists. If you're unsure about pursuing art, I encourage you to try it here. There are so many opportunities, and the community is incredibly supportive. Since moving here, I've felt like I've found a new home and I'm able to fully embrace my talents. If you're an artist looking for a welcoming city, Calgary is definitely worth considering.
PIB: We have seen different mediums in your work, how do you decide which medium to use every time you create an art piece?
YC: As an artist who is self-taught, I like to go with the flow and let my feelings guide me. I believe that I can excel in any medium, but I choose the one that suits my mood, energy, and available time. Despite my versatility, something that I have in common in my paintings is my love for nature, appreciation of beauty, and my Latin roots.
On the other hand, one of my favourite forms of art is oil painting on wood. I love the natural curves and smell of wood, which makes me feel connected to Mother Earth. It also requires patience and perseverance to wait for the paint to dry. And as an artist/collector, I am fascinated for keeping memories with plants and small insects, which I sometimes incorporate into my artwork.
PIB: Can you describe why art is important in our community?
YC: Art is essential to our lives, just like sun is to the earth. It is not only about mastering techniques, but it is also about expressing our soul, body, imagination, and heart. Art inspires others to create and be unique, making it an important part of every community. Besides that, it brings beauty, harmony, and celebrates our heritage. It also reminds us of our vulnerability and what makes us human.
Through art, we can express our deepest emotions and connect with others in ways that words alone cannot. Let us cherish and celebrate the power of art, and never forget the importance of creativity in our lives.
PIB: What is the main inspiration for you to create work?
YC: I take inspiration from nature and my Latin roots; I apply my engineering background to create my own unique tools and techniques. My artist’s aesthetic choices are intuitive and often inspired by my feelings, resulting in gentle yet provocative images with a timeless point of view. Through the detailed and precise brush strokes, my paintings summon a joyful and vibrant emotional response. My artistic style is characterized by an emphasis on emotion, balanced by romance and adoration of nature.
For over ten years, I have honed my painting skills to a great extent. However, I sometimes struggle with finding a balance between my inner creative drive and my tendency for self-criticism. Furthermore, I am contemplating whether I should pursue art as a career or simply continue to create art for my own happiness.
PIB: How has being an immigrant has changed the way to approach your art?
YC: I can understand how challenging it can be to immigrate to a new country and have to focus only on survival, rather than pursuing your passions. However, I am glad I have found strength and confidence in myself through this experience. It's amazing that art has given me an opportunity to connect with people who have gone through similar experiences and has provided me with a sense of purpose in Calgary. My journey just started and I am not giving up.
PIB: How important is it for you to be an ally of the queer community as an artist and individual?
YC: Believing in yourself is crucial if you want to step out of your comfort zone. In my personal experience, I have always found art to be therapeutic in healing my fears and concerns throughout life. When I paint, it feels like I am transported to another world where I am the magician and creator of everything. With a brush in my hand, everything seems possible.
If this is possible when I paint, I think as an ally of the queer community, I embrace anyone to be who they want, to feel confident with the things that make us unique and authentic, and to enjoy the little things without regrets. In my path as a newcomer in Canada, life has not been easy. There are moments where I felt I didn’t belong here; I was not part of this land and I was fighting on my own. And my friends from the queer community were always there, no matter what. I understand that things don't always go as planned, but remember to embrace the process. Just like a painter adds as many coats as they desire to create a masterpiece, you too have the power to shape your own story. So, take your time, enjoy the journey, and don't be too hard on yourself. You got this!
PIB: Do you have any advice for new immigrant artists in how they can pursue their careers
YC: Do not stop! I repeat, do not stop!! Keep creating art, even if you lack confidence or don't have much time or all the necessary supplies. Take it one step at a time. We need more people who remind us of our humanity and the beauty that exists in our differences and life's challenges. We can always be reborn through art. And you cannot get away from art, it will always find you. So, no matter what, make art!
